Gases in the Atmosphere: The Silent Threat to Health
Clean air is the foundation of life and well-being. Just as Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of identifying the root cause of disease within the body, we must also recognize the external causes of ill health around us. Uncontrolled factory exhausts, massive burning of waste materials, and reckless pollution release harmful gases into the atmosphere, silently affecting our health and the balance of nature.
Exposure to toxic gases such as carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxides can lead to respiratory disorders, cardiac problems, reduced immunity, and chronic fatigue. Children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health issues are most vulnerable. In Ayurvedic terms, polluted air aggravates Kapha and Vata Doshas, weakens Prana Vayu (life force carried in breath), and disturbs the natural balance of body and mind.
To restore health, Ayurveda teaches that prevention is the greatest medicine. Just as we cleanse the body with Panchakarma, we must also cleanse the environment. Practicing carbon negativity, as seen in Bhutan, should be the collective aim of humanity. Every individual can contribute by reducing carbon and gas emissions, planting and protecting trees, walking in forests, and supporting eco-friendly practices.
