Acrodermatitis and Ayurveda

Acrodermatitis is a group of inflammatory skin conditions that typically affect the hands, feet, elbows, and knees. One common form is Acrodermatitis Enteropathica, which is often linked to zinc deficiency and presents with red, scaly patches, blisters, and skin irritation. According to Dr. Varun Ram Raj, one of the leading Ayurvedic doctors in India, such skin disorders are often rooted in the vitiation of Pitta and Kapha doshas, nutritional imbalances, and Ama (toxins) in the body.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, skin is a reflection of internal health—especially liver function, digestion, and immunity. Acrodermatitis can be managed through blood purification (Rakta Shodhana), Ama pachana (toxin digestion), and Pitta-pacifying therapies.

Dr. Varun Ram Raj recommends the following Ayurvedic interventions:

Herbs like Manjishta, Nimba (Neem), Haridra (Turmeric), and Sariva to cleanse the blood and reduce inflammation

Triphala and Arogyavardhini Vati to support digestion and liver detox

Topical application of herbal pastes like Neem and Sandalwood for soothing irritation

A diet rich in cooling, zinc-containing natural foods like pumpkin seeds, sesame, and amla

Avoid spicy, fried, and fermented foods to reduce Pitta aggravation

With the right Ayurvedic support, lifestyle changes, and nutritional correction, the severity and recurrence of acrodermatitis can be significantly managed.

Note: Always consult a qualified Ayurvedic physician before starting any herbal treatment, especially in chronic or deficiency-related conditions.
